For the first time in decades, the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) has provided clarity on what exam question writers are told.

In a document released on the CFPC's website called the CFPC's Select Answer Management Problems (SAMP) Writing Guidelines, there are new details for exam writers on how to develop a SAMP case, what to do, and what to avoid. Example questions are also provided with clarification on why certain answers are marked incorrect.

Key takeaways:

  • Use of images is encouraged

  • Expect 2 to 5 questions on each SAMP case, and 5 to 10 answers per case

  • Right answers are worth 1 point

  • Questions will not ask candidates to apply simple facts; instead, the exam tests if you can apply knowledge

We provide practice questions that are written and edited by Canadian physicians to meet this standard — check out our free SAMP question.

For more details, check out our video on this topic, as well as our video announcing the other new document from the CFPC, the CCFP Exam Blueprint.
